Description

FortiExtender 5G/LTE Gateways

FortiExtender indoor 5G and LTE gateways provide scalable, secure, and resilient connectivity to keep enterprise networks online and protected. Built for Fortinet—½s Secure Networking approach, FortiExtender improves business continuity by combining wired broadband and cellular WAN options, while extending the value of the Fortinet Security Fabric to remote and distributed environments.

Ideal for point of sale systems, healthcare facilities, factories, kiosks, micro-branches, and other locations where reliable internet access is critical, FortiExtender supports always-on connectivity and secure remote device access.

Improve Uptime and Business Continuity

FortiExtender is designed to reduce downtime and keep sites connected even when primary links fail. With support for cellular failover and load balancing, businesses can maintain access to critical systems and cloud services during outages, performance degradation, or ISP disruption.

Secure SD-WAN and Security Fabric Integration

FortiExtender integrates directly with FortiGate and Fortinet Secure SD-WAN, appearing as a standard network interface within FortiOS. This allows administrators to apply consistent security policies, routing, and WAN controls across wired and cellular links using familiar Fortinet workflows.

With Security Fabric integration, FortiExtender helps extend enterprise-grade security and visibility to remote locations and edge deployments, supporting consistent control without adding complexity.

Out-of-Band Management for Remote Sites

FortiExtender includes features that support out-of-band management, enabling administrators to access and troubleshoot remote networking infrastructure when primary connectivity is unavailable. This is especially valuable for unmanned sites and distributed deployments where remote recovery is essential.

Flexible Deployment for Better Cellular Signal

FortiExtender supports Power over Ethernet, allowing the device to be installed up to 100 metres away from a FortiGate or network switch using standard Ethernet cabling. This makes it easier to place the gateway in the best location for cellular reception without long antenna runs.

Selected models also include SFP connectivity, enabling fibre deployments beyond 100 metres where required.

Multi-WAN Connectivity with 5G/LTE and Wired Options

FortiExtender supports both cellular WAN and wired WAN connectivity to provide redundancy and performance flexibility.

  • Cellular WAN supports dual-SIM and dual-modem options on selected models, enabling multiple carrier profiles and improved resiliency

  • Dual-SIM capabilities support intelligent failover based on signal strength, link health, disconnects, and data plan preferences

  • Dual-modem models support active-active cellular links for high availability and load balancing

  • A dedicated Ethernet WAN port enables wired broadband integration alongside cellular WAN for additional uplink redundancy

LAN Connectivity for Branch and HA Environments

Multiple LAN Ethernet ports allow FortiExtender to connect directly to local devices and support branch deployments. This is especially useful for FortiGate high availability pairs, where each FortiGate can connect directly to the FortiExtender and share WAN access via load balancing or failover.

VxLAN Extension for Remote Network Fabrics

FortiExtender supports LAN extension using VxLAN technology, allowing the Layer 2 broadcast domain of a remote FortiGate to be extended to a standalone FortiExtender device without requiring an on-site FortiGate. This enables secure edge deployments that still benefit from centralised security controls and fabric-style networking.

High Availability with VRRP Support

For environments where a FortiGate high availability pair is not feasible, FortiExtender can support VRRP to provide continuity alongside a single FortiGate. In the event of a FortiGate failure, FortiExtender can temporarily take over NAT functions to maintain connectivity, then return to a passive role once the FortiGate is restored.

Model Options to Suit Different Requirements

FortiExtender gateways are available across multiple models supporting LTE Category 6 through Category 20, and 5G Sub-6 deployments depending on region and use case. Options include:

  • Compact indoor gateways for branches, kiosks, and POS environments

  • Multi-port models with configurable WAN and LAN interfaces

  • Models with fibre support through SFP interfaces

  • Models with integrated Wi-Fi 6 capability

  • Regional modem variants for EMEA, APAC, North America, and global carrier compatibility

Centralised Management Options

FortiExtender supports both cloud management and on-premises management approaches, allowing organisations to choose the model that best aligns with their operational needs. A rich interface design provides flexibility across multiple LAN and WAN connections, making FortiExtender suitable for both simple edge deployments and more advanced branch connectivity requirements.
